Customer Guide ยท eSIM Companion Plan

Your watch.
Your number.
No phone needed.

The eSIM Companion Plan puts your EmuTel mobile on your wrist. Add your Apple or Samsung smartwatch to your existing service and call, text and use data straight from your watch, on the same number, with your phone left at home.

$15/mo, $5 setup 1GB data a month Unlimited standard national calls Shares your number One watch per plan Australia only
01

What is the eSIM Companion Plan?

It links a cellular Apple or Samsung smartwatch to your EmuTel mobile service. Your watch shares your existing mobile number, so it works even when your phone is nowhere in sight.

Go phone-free

Head out for a run or duck to the shops and still take a call, without your phone in your pocket.

One number

Calls and texts use your existing number. Incoming calls ring on your phone and your watch at once.

Peace of mind

Emergency features and location sharing stay with you, even when you have left the phone behind.

02

Before you start

A few things need to line up. If they do not, the setup screen will let you know and stop you before you finish, so it is worth a quick check first.

An eligible EmuTel plan

Your mobile service needs to be an eligible 5G plan. Data-only plans and 4G plans cannot add a companion plan.

A cellular smartwatch

An Apple Watch or Samsung Galaxy Watch with GPS + Cellular. Wi-Fi-only watches, other brands, phones and tablets are not supported.

Same brand family

Your watch and phone must be the same brand (Apple with iPhone, Samsung with Samsung), compatible models, both on the latest software.

Made for Australia

For use in Australia only, no overseas roaming. It runs on the Telstra Wholesale Mobile Network, so you can check coverage at your place first.

03

Compatible devices

Your watch must be a cellular model (GPS + Cellular), and your phone must support eSIM. Here is what works.

Quick tip. Double-check your phone model has eSIM before you sign up. No eSIM on the phone, no companion plan on the watch.
04

Setting it up

Activation happens on your devices and takes a few minutes. There is no physical SIM and nothing to wait for in the post.

Get these ready first
  • Your EmuTel mobile number and account number. The setup screen asks for a "6-digit PIN", which is simply your EmuTel account number. You will find it on your bill, or ask us.
  • Keep your phone next to your watch, connected by Bluetooth, for the whole setup.
  • Have both devices on the latest software and connected to the internet.
Step 1 On your phone, open the watch app

Apple Watch

  1. Open the Watch app.
  2. Tap Mobile (or Cellular).
  3. Tap Set Up Mobile Plan.

Samsung Galaxy Watch

  1. Open the Galaxy Wearable app.
  2. Go to Watch settings.
  3. Tap Mobile plans, then Next.
Step 2 On the activation screen

Your watch runs on the Telstra Wholesale Mobile Network, and the activation screens are provided by Telstra. The steps are the same for Apple and Samsung.

  1. Tap Connect to begin.
  2. Enter your mobile number. Where it asks for the 6-digit PIN, enter your EmuTel account number, then tap Continue.
  3. We text a one-time code to your mobile. Enter it to verify.
  4. Read the plan details, then tap Accept & add device.
  5. You are subscribed. Tap Done. Your watch may take a little while to show as active.
๐Ÿ“‹
Before you tap Connect, you will be asked to confirm you have checked the pricing and terms with EmuTel. Not sure on either? Talk to us first, we will sort it in a minute.
05

Is my watch on its own connection?

Here is how to tell whether your watch is running on cellular (its own connection) or leaning on your phone over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

Apple Watch

Open Control Centre and look at the Mobile button. It turns green when you are on cellular, and the bars show your signal. If it is white, your watch is using your iPhone or Wi-Fi.

Samsung Galaxy Watch

Look for the 4G icon at the top of the watch status panel. If you only see the Bluetooth icon, the watch is connected to your phone, not cellular.

๐Ÿ’ฌ
A note on texting. The companion plan does not use standard SMS or MMS on the watch, so messaging works through apps like iMessage or WhatsApp. What your watch can do also depends on the model.
06

Billing

The companion plan is a small monthly add-on to your EmuTel mobile. Here is how it lands on your bill.

  • It shows as a separate line on your EmuTel bill, sitting under your mobile number.
  • Your first bill includes a part-month charge (if you started mid-cycle), the next month in advance, and the one-off $5 eSIM activation charge.
  • After that it is billed monthly in advance. Your billing cycle runs from the 1st of the month to the last day of the month.
  • No excess data charges. If you use your 1GB before the month is up, data pauses until the next cycle. Most people use around 100MB, so this is rare.
  • Cancel partway through a month and that month is not refunded.
  • We email you at 50%, 85% and 100% of your data. Make sure email notifications are switched on for your mobile service.
๐Ÿท๏ธ
Pricing. $15 per month, plus a one-off $5 eSIM activation charge, added to your EmuTel mobile bill. Prices include GST.

Managing your plan

Swapping watches, changing phones, or cancelling. All of it is done from your watch app.

Swapping to a new watch

Run the setup again on the new watch and follow the same steps. You will be asked to confirm disconnecting the old one, since only one watch can be connected at a time.

Changing your phone

Even if your new phone is the same brand, the companion plan needs to be removed and set up again:

  1. Remove the companion plan through your watch app, and let us know so billing stops.
  2. Unpair your watch from the old phone.
  3. Bluetooth pair the watch to your new phone.
  4. Set up the companion plan again (Section 4).

Removing or cancelling

Open the Watch app (Apple) or the Galaxy Wearable app (Samsung), then go to Manage Telstra Account.

๐Ÿšซ
Do not tap "Remove Telstra plan". That takes the plan off the watch without actually cancelling it, so you would keep being billed. Choose your watch from the list, tap Remove, review, then Accept & Remove Device.

What happens when you cancel

  • Your watch loses its own connection and will need your phone nearby again.
  • There is no part-month refund for the cycle you cancel in.
  • If you reconnect later, a new monthly fee and another one-off $5 eSIM activation charge apply.

FAQs

Can I connect more than one watch?+

No. One cellular smartwatch can be connected to your mobile service at a time. To use a different watch, disconnect the current one first (see Managing your plan).

If I move to a 4G plan, can I keep the companion plan?+

No. The companion plan only works on eligible 5G plans. Moving to a 4G plan means it can no longer stay connected, so you would need to cancel it first.

Does it use my main plan's data?+

No. The companion plan has its own 1GB each month and does not touch your phone plan's data. It is designed to stand on its own.

What happens if it runs out of data?+

Data pauses until your next billing cycle. There are no excess charges. Typical use on a smartwatch is around 100MB a month, so most people never get close.

Do I need my phone to set it up?+

Yes. Keep your phone connected to your watch by Bluetooth during setup and through the activation process.

Can I use it overseas?+

No. The companion plan is for use in Australia only and will not make calls or use data overseas. If your watch has Wi-Fi and your phone is online, you may still get some notifications over a Wi-Fi network.

How is the coverage? Will it work where I am?+

Your watch runs on the Telstra Wholesale Mobile Network, which covers most of Australia. As with any mobile service, coverage and speed can vary with your location, the buildings around you and network conditions. Check what to expect at your address on our mobile coverage map before you sign up.

I can't see the option to set up a plan on my watch.+

Check that your watch is a cellular model that supports eSIM, its software is up to date, and it is connected to the internet. If the option still does not appear, your watch may not be compatible, so check it against the compatible devices list.

I changed my phone or watch. What now?+

You will need to remove the companion plan and set it up again on the new device, even if it is the same brand. See Managing your plan for the steps.

Need a hand?

If the activation screen throws an error, here is what it usually means and what to do.

  • "You are not authorised". You have used all three tries. Double-check your mobile number and account number, then try again.
  • "There was a problem" or "we were unable to connect". Wait a moment and try again. If it keeps happening, get in touch and we will look into it.
  • Locked out of pairing. If you have tried to pair three times in 24 hours, give it 24 hours and try once more.
  • Still stuck. Talk to a real person. We would rather sort it than leave you guessing.
